DIY ghosties made with oven bake clay

DIY Ghosties with Oven-Bake Clay

Emme and I are in spooky season heaven over here! and we recently (and quite randomly) bought a pack of oven bake clay (Amazon affiliate link there) and made all sorts of tiny and fun fall sculptures! The ghosties we made were SO SIMPLE I wanted to share them with you. There are two methods to make these, and a variety of ways to finish them, so read on! I promise not to write the whole history of clay or why these will change your life before you get to the instructions for the DIY Ghosties. 🤣👻

How to Shape the DIY Ghosties

I’ll preface this by saying watch the instagram reel linked below if you don’t want to read instructions! Either way you begin, break off a small chunk of clay and begin kneading it in your hands, and roll it into a smooth ball. This clay becomes easier to handle as you warm it up and work with it. Next you have two choices! You can either squish the ball then roll it flat (which is fun for littles), or start making what it essentially a tiny pinch pot around your thumb.

If you choose to roll the ball flat, try to make it as even a circle as you can, and it can be as thing as about 1/8th of an inch (but can also be thicker!). Then you will drape it across your thumb and start to pinch and adjust the folds to look like a ghost!

Finishing the DIY Ghosties

If you want to have holes for eyes, poke those with a toothpick BEFORE you bake. I think it would eb fun to make these big enough to stick a tealight under, but we didn’t do that this time! Bake the clay at 275 degrees fahrenheit for 15 mins per 1/8th of an inch thickness! These should be OK around 20 minutes. Allow them to dry, then you can sharpie eyes and mouths on, or paint them with acrylic paint.

When Emme and I finished our ghosties, we realized it would have been super cool to make them a tiny bit bigger and poke the holes bigger to put tea lights under them! Alas, we had already run out of clay because we did clay work three mornings in a row! I recommend giving that a try if you have a new pack of clay though!
