DIY Jewelry Storage and Display Cork Board

People, when I tell you my office mess and jewelry had gotten out of control, I mean it had (has) gotten OUT OF CONTROL! I had a million (like 20) nails in the wall holding up necklaces, earrings were all over the shelves and my worktop space was completely cluttered. Will spare you the before photo. I had been thinking a loooong time about what sort of organization system I could do to contain it all. Check out the little DIY project I did to solve my problem in this blog post!

Onward to Target.

Fast forward to a few weekends ago when I went on a “big city” trip to Tuscaloosa with some girlfriends to hit up the Target (we drive an hour and a half to visit Target). We were making our way through the aisles when BAM, the aisle of office supplies appeared and there were a row of pretty cork boards. I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before! Probably because pinterest had me thinking I was going to find some driftwood in northeast Mississippi (lol) and make a DIY bohemian display. Scratch that. No driftwood here.

Anyways. The two options I thought about are pictured below (affiliate links), the Ubrands White Wood Frame Burlap Bulletin Board (20″ x 30″) @ $19.99 or the Wood Frame Bulletin Board (23″ x 35″) @ 9.99. So obviously, even though I loved the linen and white look of the first one, went with the larger one that was half the price! Plus, I displayed my horizontally because I have long necklaces that fit perfectly that way. If you want to save yourself a headache, go ahead and lay your necklaces out on the ground all nice and stretched out and measure how long they are! That way you know how long wide or tall you need your board to be. 🙂

How to hang things?

The next issue was actually hanging jewelry from these. Looked across the aisle and boom, tons of adorable push pins to choose from! I went with two boxes (18) of these Ubrands Metal Arrow push pins for $3 a box of 9. Kind of pricey but worth it, and I figure I can mix in plain wooden ones later!

Enter DIY time.

I got my purchases home–including some fabulous lamps from World Market that I maybe didn’t need but loooove–and instantly got to work! Two pieces from my Etsy shop up were already on the wall, so I just moved them over to be nice and snug with my board. I started placing my little arrows as soon as I had it hung up! Once I got them arranged, I pulled it all backdown and painted my frame white. Tedious, I know, I just got ahead of myself.

Painting the Frame

I just grabbed some random leftover white paint I had in the garage, taped the cork with painters tape and quickly painted the frame! If you have spray paint that would work, but you’ll have to cover the cork! If you want to do a very professional job, sand the frame a little before you paint so it has something better to stick to than the glossy wood. Mine may scrap off at the touch of a fingernail because I didn’t.

Adding Earring Storage

For earrings, I did two things. First, I found some pieces of dowel rod left over from hanging my weavings. I cut those to size with a dog nail clipper (it works, just trust me). I found old cup hooks from the garage that fit the dowel rod. Then, I twisted the cup hooks into the cork and threaded the dowel rod through. You could also paint the dowel rods and the cork if the brown bores you. 🙂

I just stuck my stud earrings straight into the board with their mate. A small decorative bowl on my desk has the earring backs in it which I can grab as I need.

Displaying other things

Of course, I have plenty of room left on my DIY board for other things. I threw up some things I had around. They will change with the times I am sure!

Let me know what jewelry displays and storage you use, I would love to see!
